Since its inception in 1997, VCR has attempted to use Canadian and U.S. government statistics to track furniture industry shipments and other data, year over year. This comparison of "apples with apples" has been constantly thwarted (especially by Statistics Canada) by changes in data collection methodology and the "baseline" of companies surveyed. Major changes occured in 2000 and 2003, therefore VCR's previous graphs (covering 1990 to 2007) have been archived (see the links at bottom of page) and three new graphs developed starting with the year 2004.
For statistical purposes sectors of the furniture industry are assigned code numbers established by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a consequence of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The three digit NAICS code for the entire Furniture and Related Product Manufacturing is NAICS 337. NAICS further assigns up to six digit codes to specific sectors, for example 337121 refers to Upholstered Household Furniture Manufacturing and 337214 refers to Office Furniture Manufacturing (except Wood). This website provides a list of the main NAICS furniture codes.
Except where noted, graphs below show NAICS 33712 (Household and Institutional Furniture Manufacturing) data .
